HISTORY OF GOHIKING.ORG

In the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, I have taken the time to reorganize my life and my possessions including my digital ones.  What follows is a little of the history behind my domain name and my involvement with various non-profit organizations in promoting and conducting hiking events over the last 40 years.

Since I was a teenager, I have been a very avid hiker and traveler and have participated in many sporting events with my father all over the United States.  My very first event was a Volksmarch event which I believe was only the 3rd of it's kind in the United States in 1979 in Fort Meade, Maryland.  You can read a little more about Volksmarching and Volkssports on the American Volkssport Association website.  Over the following 20 years, I grew from being a participant and event volunteer to forming my own Volkssports Club in 1991 and holding 6 to 8 sanctioned events each year over the next 10 years in the greater Los Angeles area.

It was a truly enjoyable if not time consuming experience.  With the needs of family and work consuming my schedule, I needed to step back and let others take over the club's responsibilities, however I always vowed I would stay involved and help promote sports that provided physical fitness and fun to participants of all ages and abilities.
